Why board and care often costs less than assisted living
Board and care homes are smaller — usually six residents or fewer, operating out of a converted single-family home — with lower overhead than a large community with a dining hall, activities staff, and a fitness center. For many families, especially those needing a quieter, more attentive setting, board and care ends up being both less expensive and a better fit, not just a cheaper compromise.
What actually moves the price up or down
- Level of care needed: help with one or two daily activities costs less than round-the-clock supervision or complex medication management
- Room type: a shared room runs less than a private room with a private bath
- City: Laguna Beach itself has very few licensed beds (see our FAQ on that); nearby cities like Laguna Niguel and Aliso Viejo often price lower than Newport Beach
- Memory care add-on: secured units with specially trained staff carry a premium over standard assisted living
What's usually included
Most quoted monthly rates include meals, housekeeping, laundry, medication management, and basic activities. Ask specifically about what's not included — incontinence care, higher-acuity assistance, and transportation are common add-on fees that can meaningfully change the real monthly total.
Ways to make it more affordable
Board and care over community-style assisted living, shared rooms over private, and — for those who qualify — VA Aid & Attendance or long-term care insurance can all significantly change what a family actually pays out of pocket. See our guide to paying for care for more on that.
